Hello! Edmonton Newborn and Family Photographer | Pause Photography

Thanks for stopping by! I'm Rona-Marie Harvey, and I hope this is a place where you can get to know me.

Since the birth of my daughter in early 2012, I have been focusing on family portraits, lifestyle sessions and newborn photography. It's nice to always have access to a willing model at home!

When not making portraits, I also work as a graphic designer. I love having family time at home with my husband, daughter and son. Coffee, walks, going to the playground with the kids and anything chocolate are things I enjoy on a daily basis.

If you'd like to connect with me, feel free to drop me a line at any time.

Thanks to Jaleen Lessard from Sweet Life Photography for my portrait with Parker.

School’s out for summer! And with that, some of you may be wondering how you’ll fill your extra hours together as a family. I know family outings can get expensive, so I’ve compiled a list of some of my own family’s top things to do over these summer months, that won’t break the bank. Here, in no particular order, are my

Top 13 Free (or low cost) Family-Friendly Things to to in Edmonton this Summer

BONUS: You’ll get a gift valued at $100.

  1. Outdoor pools
The City claims their outdoor pools are a perfect place to cool off over the hot summer days, and I agree. From the City’s page: “Visit any of the City’s outdoor swimming pools and have a whale of a time splashing, socializing with friends and family or simply relaxing for the day. The City manages a total of 5 outdoor swimming pool complexes including the newly refurbished and first of its kind in Canada, Borden Natural Swimming Pool.” BONUS: access to the outdoor pools is FREE this summer! Pro tip: go on a weekday, as early as possible to avoid some of those long lines. Don’t forget the sunblock!
  2. Edmonton Prospects Baseball Game

There are two July afternoon games (July 15 and 29 at 2:05PM; see the full summer schedule here.) so you can still get the kids to bed on time! Kids 5 and under are free, tickets for kids 6–12 start at just $10 and adult tickets start at $18. It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon in the sun enjoying baseball concession and the occasional heckler (I’ve heard hotdogs at baseball games taste better than regular hot dogs. As a vegetarian, I can’t vouch for this, but my source is extremely reliable). Don’t forget the sunblock!
  3. Spray Parks
Find a listing of all the City spray parks here. Chances are, you’ve already visited your neighbourhood park, so why not explore the city and try a new location? Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it. This is a great place for free play, to keep cool and meet some new friends.
  4. Telus World of Science

While at the top end of admission prices in this list, if you invest in a family membership, it pays for itself within just a couple of visits. We have chosen to have a family membership here for the past few years, and have never regretted it. The kids love the Discover Zone kids area, and we’re looking forward to checking out Down to the Bone, Dinosaurs Unearthed. It’s the perfect place to spend a day at if there’s a summer storm, or if it’s just too dang hot out. Plus you get discounts on admission to the IMAX theatre. Find out all TWOSE has to offer on their website.
  5. Cineplex Movies Family Favourites
Speaking of movies, we are big fans of the family favourites at Cineplex. Usually on Saturday mornings at 11am, they’ve added Wednesday morning showtimes for July and August! With $2.99 admission prices, you can’t go wrong. A portion of the proceeds goes towards supporting WE Charity. Get details and listings here.
  6. Summer Starts at EPL
Running from June 23 – August 25, this program “offers games, prizes and activities to encourage kids to read, create and explore during the summer months”. We’ve registered and are starting our reading log. There are awesome weekly and grand prize draws for reaching your goals. You can register for the program any time throughout the summer. We’re already planning which events we’re going to participate in. Get details on what’s happening at your branch here. Don’t forget to check out EPL’s podcast around summer reads for both kids and adults.
  7. Art Gallery of St. Albert
AGSA has a pile of community programs for all ages. Check out a collaborative art making series of 3 classes with your 3–5 year olds, or if you’d like to jump into a Saturday class, there’s Preschool Picasso for kids 3–5 and Artventures for your 6–12 year olds; both scheduled for the 3rd Saturday of each month. Pre-registration is required. Be sure to check out their current exhibition while you’re there.
  8. Arts and Heritage St. Albert
Arts and Heritage St. Albert has a big list of Canada Day events at their heritage sites (helloooo homemade ice-cream!), Food Trucks with beer gardens on August 31, ArtWalk, St. Albert Historic Walking Tours, Harvest Festival, as well as drop in and community programs at their heritage sites and the Musée Héritage Museum. Check out the Summer Events brochure here.
  9. Monthly Mini Model Build at the LEGO Store
Kids 6–14 can build their own free mini model at the LEGO store and take it home when they’re done! Register online to secure a slot. Registration for the August build opens July 15. Visit the LEGO website for details. July dates: July 3 and 4.
  10. The River Valley
Explore the River Valley on bike or by foot. With both our kiddos on two-wheelers now, we’re anxious to get out on more trails. The paved trails around Rundle Park are great. Bikes are not required though; Rundle Park has playgrounds for the kiddos, paddle boat rentals and more.
  11. Cats on your Mats: Family Cat Yoga at the Humane Society
It’s the puuuurfect opportunity for the whole family to stretch, practice their cat pose and snuggle with some shelter kitties. I’m not sure if downward facing dog will be allowed, and chaos might erupt if anyone tries pigeon pose, but fun is sure to be had by all. And now that you’ve seen my punny side, pounce on over to the Humane Society page to register for their upcoming classes on July 21 or August 25. These sell out fast.
  12. 4Cats Art Studio
Book an art party, or take your kids (ages2–15) to art classes or camps. With a tonne of options for mediums and skill levels, you’re sure to find something for yourself your your budding artist. Find the studio closest to you, along with a complete listing of what’s available on the 4Cats Art Studio website.
  13. Viva Clay Works

In the blink of an eye, Spring Break is over and we’re back to our regular routines. I don’t know about you, but for me, it didn’t feel long enough.

I’ve spent these last few weeks building snowmen and jumping through puddles with the kids at nearly every chance we’ve had. I’m excited to see spring arriving, and with spring comes Mother’s Day. I’m so excited to be offering a day of special mini-sessions for mum. Session fees are $75 and include one print, up to 8×10″ in size.

Mother's Day 2017 MIni Session

This little ham’s mummy brought him in for his first Baby Steps Milestones Session with me when he was sitting, rolling and starting to crawl. It seemed like he was moving faster as his session went on. I’m pretty sure he was a pro crawler by the time we wrapped up his session. Spencer is a charmer, always full of grins and trying to chew on everything (getting new teeth is tough!). Mum brought in lots of fun outfits for him to wear, I barely needed to dip into my own stash of baby boy outfits.

This age is one of my favourite to photograph — they’re so in awe of everything around them, they are full of social smiles and can’t quite run away from you yet. I don’t count rolling or crawling as running away.

I think Spencer is going to continue to be quite the little comedian as he grows up. And he’s going to keep his mama busy, always chasing after him!

One of my all-time favourite pictures is Spencer with his mama at the bottom of this blog post. I love the combination of her colourful tattoos with Spencer’s almost permanent grin. I can still feel his mama’s connection with him when I look at that picture.

10 comments and/or social shares of this post will get Spencer’s mama a new 8×10″ print from his session. Spread the love.

Brandy and I first met a few years ago at a playground, when my daughter, Parker, was just toddling around. Parker and Julian played, and Brandy and I ended up exchanging numbers. We’ve been good friends ever since. I’m thankful every day for the good, caring people like Brandy who are in my life and in the lives of my family.

When Brandy asked me to photograph Julian and her together for the holidays, I was ecstatic! There’s little more that I love than a cozy in-home portrait, combined with a Christmas tree, decorations and the antics of a certain little someone. I have so much love for these two.

So now that it’s getting close to half-way through November, I think it’s okay to start decorating (or at least planning decorations!) for the holidays. It’s one of my favourite times of year.

If you’re thinking of family pictures this holiday season, get in touch with me and we can plan a custom portrait experience for you and yours and we’ll capture those cozy holiday feels for you to relive all year ’round.

If you’re in the holiday spirit, 10 comments and/or social shares of this post will get Brandy and Julian a shiny new 8×10″ print from their session. Spread the love.

YEG Christmas Mini Sessions

Edmonton Lifestyle Documentary Family Photographer for Christmas Holidays

I was excited when Natalie’s mum and dad contacted me about setting up a newborn session for when she would be born. I had photographed her big brother 3 years ago when he was first born. That’s one of the best things about being a newborn photographer in Edmonton — I get to see families grow‚ and firstborns become big brothers and sisters.

Getting big brother and new baby sister together for a portrait was no easy task though, and I actually ended up compositing this one together. What’s that saying… if at first you don’t succeed‚ Photoshop! I do my best to get everything just right as I’m taking the pictures‚ but keeping the littles happy is more important.

Documenting my children in their every day activities is something I need to do more often. I love looking back through these images and seeing them as they really are – totally engrossed in finding ants, breaking sticks, digging in the dirt and being just plain silly. They don’t give me long, as they would prefer if I played “real” games with them instead of chasing them around with a camera in hand.

They are usually the first ones I practice new techniques on. In a few of the images below, I broke away from perfectly sharp and focused images for some slightly whimsical and artistic images with some tilt shift – I love how it turned out! These are the pictures I’ll treasure as our family grows older. The ones that show a little behind the scenes of our lives together.

I am planning on making the most of our next few weeks together. In September, my daughter starts Kindergarten. This mama is having a hard time coming to terms with that. I’m sure I’ll be pulling out pictures of her to look at while she’s away in school. Any other mamas out there sending their littles off to school for the first time? How are you managing with the upcoming transition? I feel my babies are growing up just a little too fast for me. The days are passing us by at whirlwind speed.

Oh my gosh, how did I not blog this earlier? If you are on my email list (if you’re not, visit my main website, wait for the popup, then enter your info), you should have seen an email land in your inbox letting you know about my referral program, and how you can even earn your next portrait session on me, just by referring your friends! Here is what you need to know:

When you refer a friend, you get to give them a $50 gift towards custom photography, and you get a $100 credit to put towards your next session. Refer 5 friends, and get your next portrait session on me! If you’d like to give your friends something tangible, let me know and I’ll get as many cards ready for you as you need. Otherwise, just have them tell me that they heard of me through you, and I’ll automatically credit both of your accounts.

The small print: Credits are applied once session is booked and confirmed. Credits are not valid if session cancels.

That’s it! It’s never been easier to get a complementary portrait session with me. I can’t wait to photograph you and your friends. Get in touch with me to book your next portrait session, or to ask any questions you might have.
