As part of my Christmas gift this year, my wonderful boyfriend Cody, got me a gift card to one of my favourite camera stores. I got over there as fast as I could and ordered myself a shiny new Westcott Apollo 24″ softbox. I was itching to try it out, but had a few projects to finish up first. Taking it out of the box was my reward for finishing my work. I like treats like that. Unfortunately, I hadn’t booked anyone for pictures this week. No matter. I have a tripod and a timer on my camera. How hard could it really be to be my own model? It turned out to be harder than I thought.
For starters, I couldn’t get the focusing right. I was in our apartment, so space was limited. Regular height ceilings meant I couldn’t raise the softbox as high as I would have liked, and I found they put walls in the most inconvenient places. I was hopping back and forth over the couch trying to make it to my spot in time. To help me focus, I propped the mop up about where I was going to stand and focused on that. It didn’t always work out and I was soon tired of shot after shot being out of focus. I did manage to get a few decent ones though. I have to say I love love LOVE the light from this modifier! It is definitely my new favourite. I can’t wait to get the 50″ version.
We recently added a new puppy to our family. His name is Tucker, and here is his blog debut. He wasn’t interested in sitting very still, so you only get to see 2 images of him this time. I’m sure he’ll show up again though. Isn’t he just adorable?
Great use of the light to make a dramatic portrait (with soft light) Rone! Nicely done (and your hair is looking good too). Will have to meet Tucker soon too.
Tucker looks so happy! And like he can smile now too! So glad to see how happy he is with you guys!
